Moky Makura

Moky Makura was born and raised in Nigeria. After studying in England where she obtained an honors degree in politics, law and economics from Buckingham University, she relocated to Johannesburg, South Africa, where she now resides.

She initially began working in PR in the UK, with Redwood Publishing, Hill and Knowlton, Paragon Communications, Lynne Franks PR and in PGC promotions, and also in South Africa, with Text 100. In the late 1990’s she launched her own PR consultancy company, RED PR, before selling it to FCB Redline, the largest communication and advertisement group in South Africa and from there she kick stated a career in television.

Her first on screen appearance was on the South African news and current affairs show Carte Blanche where she worked as a presenter between 2001 and 2006. This brought her to the forefront of South African TV and it landed her a lead role in Jacob’s Cross, a DSTV show that ran for 7 seasons of which she starred for 4. Recently, Makura has produced her own show on Mnet which profiles some of the high flyers in African society. This includes royalty, businessmen and media personalities from Mozambique, Ghana, Nigeria, Zambia, Botswana and Uganda. Living It, as Mokura explained, is designed to show Africa in a different light from the poverty and conflict that it is often associated with. Other credits include African Pioneers in 2004 and being the host of a marketing show on South African business channel Summit TV.

Moky Makura is also a writer and in November 2008 she completed her first book, published in 2009 with Penguin, Africa’s Greatest Entrepreneurs. Since then her book has been featured in the top ten South African business books and has been praised for its insight into a part of African society and culture that is often overlooked. She is also working as an editorial contributor to various African magazines such as Business day, Tribute to African Issues, O magazine and the Maverick.
